Gaisce 2020/21
Throughout the year, TY students in Loreto Balbriggan have been working towards getting their Bronze Award for Gaisce 2020/21. Gaisce is a programme that promotes self-development and aims to ensure that it fits the needs of everyone wishing to participate. It was first established in 1985 for young people between the ages of 15 - 25 and launched by former President Patrick J. Hillery. Since then over 300,000 students have participated in the Gaisce programme.
There are three different awards in the programme - Bronze, Silver and Gold. Currently, TY students have been aiming to receive their Bronze Award which requires them to participate in four key challenge areas. These are Community Involvement, Personal Skill, Physical Recreation and Adventure Journey. With the exception of the Adventure Journey, each challenge requires a minimum participation of 1 hour per week for 13 weeks and an additional 13 week must be completed in an area of their choice.
Community Involvement is all about giving back to the community and using your passions to make a difference, Personal Skill gives you the chance to learn or develop a new skill or interest, and Physical Recreation is about improving your fitness and being healthier. The Adventure Journey takes place over a minimum of 2 days and 1 night, and students have to plan, prepare and undertake a small expedition in a location of their choice.
Although some changes had to be made this year to the Gaisce programme due to Covid-19 and restrictions, students have had a great time working on each of the challenges and learning new skills that they can utilise in the future. Below are three videos that have been put together to showcase the work students have been putting into each challenge area with the aim of getting their Bronze Award at the end of the school year!
