The Science of Gratitude

The new concept of gratitude has cropped up quite a bit in recent months; in light of the pandemic taking over our lives. It is a simple strategy that is scientifically proven to help improve stress, resilience, relationships, your mental health and much more! First, let’s start off; what is gratitude?

Gratitude is defined in the dictionary as

“the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.”

By giving thanks, our brain releases chemicals called dopamine and serotonin which are the key neurotransmitters in charge of our emotions! Immediately, it helps us to feel happy and improves our mood greatly.

What exactly does it help?

  1. It strengthens our relationships with people and opens the door to new ones.

  2. Improves your physical and mental health.

  3. Enhances empathy and reduces aggression.

  4. Improves your self esteem.

And many more!

So as you can see gratitude is nothing but good; so why don’t you try it?

Here are ways that you can implement it into your daily life.

  1. Every day write down three things that you are grateful for, whether it is things as as small as “It didn’t rain today” or as big as “I won the lottery”, try to write down a little something each day and you will soon see the positive impact that it has on your mental wellbeing and life as a whole.

  2. Start a gratitude journal! This can be a place where you can write down your three positive things of the day, but also while being a little bit creative in the process! Being artistic is proven to be amazing for your brain, and combined with gratitude, we really have a winner! Here are some ideas for how to decorate your journal.
