Met Gala - Wear or Tear?
On September 13th this year, the highly anticipated and star studded event “The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit”, or more widely known as the “Met Gala”, took place. It is a charity event that raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City yearly. Traditionally, it happens in May every year but was postponed this year, and cancelled in 2020, due to coronavirus.
Every year, guests to this $35,000 a ticket event, are expected to follow the outfit theme. Celebrities are usually invited by different designer brands and so in turn, wear the outfit that is designed for them. This year, the theme was “American Independence”, and can be interpreted in any way that the designers want.
Annually, the Met Gala is watched and critiqued by millions of people all around the globe, so we thought we should see what our TY’s thought about some of the outgoing and controversial outfits of the night!
First up, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, an American politician and activist, who decided for her Met Gala look she wanted to make a statement on her dress. In contrast to the stark white dress, “Tax The Rich” was embellished across the back in bright red sequins. Let’s see what our TY’s thought of this outfit!
Secondly, we have international supermodel and reality TV star, Kendall Jenner, who wore a dazzling bejewelled dress designed by Givinchy. This outfit was definitely one for the books, but was it enough in the eyes of our school?
Next up we have Canadian actor, director, andwriter to name a few; Dan Levy! He made his first debut at this year's ball and like many others wanted to display a clear message about LGBTQ+ pride. Let’s see what everyone thinks!
Highly anticipated singer Rihanna is up next! This is definitely not her first Met Gala and people often look forward to seeing what she's wearing each year. Plenty of people were disappointed this year, were our TY’s among them?
Another highly anticipated attendee; Kim Kardashian! This outfit was definitely among the most controversial and talked about of this year. Did our fourth years think it was a unique fashion statement or just simply ridiculous?
Famed actor, starring in hit movies like Call Me By Your Name and newly released Dune,. Timothee Chalamet is up next! People all over social media slandered this outfit as they stated it was too casual for such a big event; but others thought his looks got him by just fine. Here’s what everyone thought.
Lastly, we have social media influencer and multi million subscribed youtuber, Emma Chamberlain. In recent years, influencers' presence at the Met Gala has been criticised constantly- but did our TY’s agree with this?
