Corinna Tolan's Skincare Advice

“What you do, do it well.” ~ Corinna Tolan
"Skin Care is Self Care." ~ Corinna Tolan

Throughout the talk Corinna informed students about the health of their skin and gave out multiple

tips and advice on having a healthy skin. Many of the tips advised are written below:

  • A daily skincare routine should include a cleanser, moisturiser and SPF.

  • To remove makeup an oil based cleanser should be used and you can follow up with a regular cleanser afterwards.

  • The best type of moisturiser is one that provides the skin with nutrients and is natural to the environment.

  • It is very important to do your research before purchasing an SPF as it is very important for protecting your skin from sun damage but it can also affect the environment e.g. in Australia certain SPFs are banned because the ingredients they contain damage the coral reef. An SPF of 15 - 20 is recommended and should be reapplied throughout the day.

  • Night time is a good time to incorporate exfoliating acids e.g. glycolic acid, salicylic acid etc. as they make your skin photosensitive and should be avoided during the day.

  • It does not matter when you use facial oils/ serums as they are just delivery systems, what matters is the ingredients in them.

  • Ingredients that should be avoided in skincare products are alcohol and perfumes. Although alcohol kills bacteria, it also removes moisture from the skin and can cause a pH imbalance, and perfumes can be quite irritating for the skin.

  • Mask acne occurs when we wear a mask for long periods of time because light is prevented from reaching the skin and breathing creates heat and moisture which is the perfect ground for bacteria to live and grow. Therefore to treat and prevent mask acne it is important to allow light to your skin, every chance that you get.

  • Food doesn't cause acne, hormones do. However, high consumption of sugar will eventually cause glycation (which adds to the aging of the skin and is very difficult to treat) and dairy can be inflammatory for some people.

  • Omega 3 and 6 found in oily fish is excellent for your skin as it not only provides nutrients to the face and skin but to all the cells in your body.

  • Sleep is integral for skin health as it is in times of rest that we renew and regenerate cells and the skin is not being exposed to free radicals at night it's not stressed.

  • Long term effects of not taking care of your skin include melanoma (skin cancer) and premature ageing.

Corinna Tolan's Product Recommendations

Taking care of your skin is much better than covering it up. Although listed below are products that Corinna recommends for girls our age to take care of your skin.

Many of these products can also be found on monicatolan.com.

  • The Alya Skincare range is very good for breakouts and teenage skin.

  • A good tan that doesn't cause breakouts is Lusso Tan.

  • Konjac sponges and Gua Sha are great skincare tools.

  • Jade rollers are good for your skin as they stimulate blood flow and lymphatic drainage. They are also good for wellbeing and relaxation which is also beneficial for the skin.

  • Silk pillow cases are great for inflamed skin as silk is naturally cooling and antibacterial. It also pulls less on the skin so it won't cause sleep lines and wrinkles when older.
